About the Turnbull Portland Center
The Turnbull Center is not a branch campus, but a vibrant entity in the state’s media center with roots at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) in Eugene. Workshops and classes are taught by Eugene-based faculty, by Portland-based professionals, and by visitors from around the nation and the world.
The launch of the George S. Turnbull Portland Center in early 2006 was the realization of a vision that the SOJC has had for more than ten years.
The Turnbull Center is already an active member of the Portland Community:
- bringing journalists of note to the table for discussions of the important issues of the day;
- providing new professional development opportunities to Portland’s communication professionals;
- joining forces with other Portland organizations to host speakers and lectures;
- offering UO students a Senior Experience that provides them with internships in Oregon’s largest city combined with late-day classes; and
- planning a series of strategic communications workshops, to be offered beginning fall 2006, and a master’s in strategic communication beginning fall 2007.
Looking ahead
The spring 2006 announcement of the UO’s plans to move to the White Stag Block in Old Town Portland is an exciting one for both the University and the School of Journalism and Communication. Plans are underway for the Turnbull Center’s new home. With nearly 6,000 square feet of space, the possibilities for the expanded Turnbull Center in the White Stag Block will increase exponentially.
The school has not been alone in making these things happen. We are grateful for the support of Lorry Lokey and our other major donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, for their amazing generosity in opening these doors for the school—in making it possible for the vision to become real.
